Data Science Workgroup Future

Another part of the discussion in the Data Science Workgroup Meeting today was the presentation of a plan for turning the Friday 2 hour meetings into a 2 hours class next year, for 2017-2018.

The current plan of the Department of Statistics is to offer a 2 unit course on Fridays that will be focused on professional skills for Data Science. The course will be focused on hands on work with data and project based. The course will focus on group discussion and communication of Data Science related learning opportunities in the Bay Area and beyond.

We will focus on learning very new technologies and using them.

My plan for next year current is to focus on:

1. Fall 2017 - Data Wrangling with R and the tidyverse.

2. Winter 2018 - Data Visualization with plot.ly and ggplot2.

3. Spring 2018 - Machine Learning with TensorFlow, H20, scikit-learn, carat

My hope is that there will be students interesting in the class STAT (TBA) Selected Topics in Statistics 2-units.
